Well this has been a long time coming. Yes, the time is finally upon us to all bask in the resplendent majesty of a new review on The Film Dump. Yes, I realise it has been a few weeks. Yes, I realise some of you may have taken to getting film recommendations from… shall we say… lesser critics. But know that I am here for you. Oh my God I’m actually reviewing a new release film…. about 10 days after release. Yeah I’m late but I couldn’t exactly not cover a James bond film. Especially after I took on the foolish task of reviewing every Bond film in the space of one month a few years back. Now, I may go into a few spoilers in this review. It’s kinda hard to not talk about certain issues or strengths of the film without going into them. So that’s your spoiler warning. Suffice to say, Spectre is a pretty solid bond film. The third best Daniel Craig film, sure, but it’s way ahead of Quantum of Solace. So, let us proceed with the somewhat spoilery review.
I was a really big fan of the original Sin City when it came out. Saw it multiple times in the cinema, imported the DVD, and then imported the director’s cut boxed set. Brought the comics and so forth. Even made a Sin City themed car on FORZA Motorsport because, yes, I had that much free time. I never thought the film was perfect but it’s hyper stylised approach, which really hadn’t been done before then barring a few exceptions, was intoxicating for me. The dark twisted tales of brutish men easily manipulated by the women of Sin City, a place where going down the right back alley can result in almost anything happening. It all appealed to me. I like Noir. I like comic books. I like hyper-stylised takes on film and pulp novel tropes. Sin City wasn’t perfect, but it was unique. It was also on the razors edge of being absolutely awful. I like film noir. There, I said it. Call me pretentious or a hipster or whatever people call people that like things that are good these days, I don’t care. I like Noir and I’m proud. Sexy Evil Genius seems to be an attempt to create a noir in the style of a tv show bottle episode. Always gotta have a unique angle to your noir in this day and age. Just look at Brick. That was all high school set and stuff and it was cool. So, Sexy Evil Genius has it’s own unique premise. Well, unique in that it’s My Dinner With Andre but with murder and a few more people. I’m a little late getting to this one. I wanted to review Snowpiercer much earlier in the year but it has still not seen a UK release. I thought it had and I had just missed it. Turns out there was a festival showing and that’s it. No DVD release or anything. But the film is up on the US version of Netflix which is easy enough to access if you’re a UK Netflix customer. So, do that. Because, Jesus, this film is pretty damn good and needs watching. You know it’s out over a lot of Europe too on DVD. They’ll play on UK DVD players fine and will be in English. Screw Weinstein and his messed up handling of this film. Anyway, click the link below for the review.
Well, I guess reviewing Slugs was pretty much inevitable for this here film blogzone thing. I do like to occasionally dip my toe into the world of low budget so-bad-they’re-good movies. Boy did I get one here. Recommended to me by a Twitter follower known as Once_Tricky, so I have him to blame for this, Slugs is a film about a town under siege by toxic, flesh eating slugs. I’m pretty sure The Goodies did a sketch like this. So, what is Slugs actually like… Click the link and I’ll try my best to explain.
Oh Brian Yuzna, you are a special kind of director. Possibly, I’d say, the closest thing horror has had to an Argento or a Fulci in the last couple of decades. Argento certainly isn’t Argento anymore. What Yuzna likes to do, when not writing Honey I Shrunk The Kids films, is take a story of something potentially dark, show you that darkness and then crank that darkness to 11 via a short segway into absolute balls out weirdness. One film that does this with quite some ballsy amount of style is his 1989 film Society. Click the link below for my review where I’ll try as hard as possible to not spoil how weird this film gets.
